How to Paint Varnished Wood?

painters-dublin

Painting varnished wood has become increasingly popular. People are painting everything from varnished doors, frames, windows and skirtings boards.

When we meet with clients to discuss to their scope of works we regularly get asked if it is possible to paint varnished wood. The answer to this questions is yes, yes you how.

However before you paint the varnished wood two things are essential

  1. It is really important that you run the wood you are painting down with sandpaper

  2. Apply a coat of specialist adhesion primer that ensures the paint sticks to a glossy surface. We use Zinsser B-I-N primer. This is a shellac based primer that dries in 15-minutes and re-coatable in 45-minutes

Once the varnished wood has been primed with B-I-N it is possible to continue to paint each surface as you normally would. As there is a coat of specialist primer covering the varnished wood any undercoat, be it oil based or water based will stick to the B-I-N primer and should not rub or flake off too easily.

If you do not use a product like B-I-N the paint you apply to the varnished wood will only still on the varnish and will rub off very easily.
